A Cleaner Cup: Why a Tea Infuser Belongs in Your Daily Tea Ritual

Why You Need a Tea Infuser (or Strainer) in Your Life

Tea is meant to be a moment of nourishment, something grounding, comforting, and supportive to the body. But how we prepare our tea matters more than most of us realize.

First Things First: What Is a Tea Infuser/ Strainer?

A tea infuser is a reusable tool designed to hold loose-leaf tea or herbs while they steep in hot water. Functionally, it replaces a traditional tea bag—without the waste or hidden materials (aka: microplastics)

A tea strainer, on the other hand, is used after brewing. It filters out loose tea leaves once the tea has finished steeping and is often preferred for larger batches or teapots.

Both options allow you to enjoy loose-leaf tea in its purest form.

The Hidden Issue with Tea Bags: Microplastics

Recent research has revealed a growing concern surrounding traditional tea bags containing microplastics and nanoplastics.

Studies show that certain tea bags, particularly plastic mesh or pyramid-shaped tea bags, can release microscopic plastic particles when exposed to the heat, water, and pressure of steeping. These particles then end up in the tea you drink.

Once ingested, microplastics have the potential to interact with the body in ways we are still actively researching. Emerging evidence suggests they may interfere with normal biological processes, including the endocrine system, which plays a key role in hormone regulation.

In other words, something as simple as your daily cup of tea could be introducing unwanted synthetic materials into your body.

What the Research Says

A scientific review titled “Microplastics and nanoplastics in tea: Sources, characteristics and potential impacts” highlights that tea bags made from plastic-based materials are especially vulnerable to releasing micro- and nanoplastics during brewing phase.

The study notes that thermal stress (hot water), physical agitation, and chemical exposure significantly increase plastic particle release, particularly in mesh-style tea bags with strings and seals made from synthetic materials.

Making the switch to loose-leaf tea and a reusable infuser is one of the simplest ways to reduce daily exposure and start leaning towards a low tox lifestyle.

What to Look for in a Tea Infuser or Strainer

When shopping for a tea infuser or strainer, quality matters. Look for:

      • Stainless steel (food-grade and plastic-free)

      • Reusable and durable materials

      • Fine mesh that allows herbs to expand while keeping particles out of your cup

      • Easy-to-clean design for daily use

A well-made infuser not only supports your health but also enhances the flavor, aroma, and potency of your tea. Overall increasing the benefits of the herbal tea.

A Small Change with a Big Impact

Choosing a tea infuser is a simple but powerful shift.

Benefits:

  • Cleaner tea with fewer contaminants

  • Reduced plastic waste

  • Better extraction of herbal benefits

  • A more intentional tea ritual
