TCM Tips to Incorporate Into Your Wellness Routine !
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practiced for over 2,000 years and reminds us that health is rooted in balance, warmth, and care—for the body, the home, and the community.
In times when the world can feel cold and uncertain, these simple practices invite us to return to warmth, grounding, and gentleness.
1. Say No to Cold Drink
In TCM, cold and icy drinks are believed to slow digestion and stagnate the flow of Qi and Blood, which can affect the body’s system. Instead, opt for warm, soothing beverages such as herbal tea or a warm turmeric latte to support digestion and energy flow.
2. Avoid Walking Barefoot
TCM emphasizes keeping the body warm and minimizing exposure to cold, including through the feet. Walking barefoot, especially on cold floors, may allow cold to enter the body. Try wearing warm socks or indoor slippers to help maintain balance and warmth.
3. Eat Warm, Cooked Foods More Often
In TCM, digestion is viewed as a warming process. Cold or raw foods can be harder for the body to break down and may weaken digestive energy over time. Some signs and symptoms that may appear are: bloating, loose stool, abdominal distention and more. Instead favor warm, cooked meals such as soups, stews, stir-fries, and lightly steamed vegetables. These foods are gentler on the digestive system and help support overall vitality.
4. Protect Your Neck and Lower Back
These areas are considered especially vulnerable to cold and wind in TCM. Exposure to drafts or cold temperatures may contribute to stiffness, discomfort, or lowered immunity. Wearing a scarf, light layer, or keeping these areas covered can help maintain balance and prevent excess cold from entering the body.
5. Try Falling Asleep Between 9–11 PM
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the hours between 9–11 PM are considered an important transition time when the body begins its deep repair and restoration processes. This window supports the Gallbladder meridians at 11PM-1AM and Liver meridians at 1AM- 3AM. These organ meridians are associated with detoxification, emotional balance, and overall vitality. Going to sleep ideally before 11PM allows the body to maximize rest, improve energy and mood, and support long-term health.
Warmth is medicine. Care is protection. Flow is freedom
